Bank-account data can show how a young business operates. Before sharing it for a financing application, get three things in order: the accounts being assessed, the receipts behind the deposits and the repayment the business could carry through a weak month.
A thin credit file makes that operating record relevant. The business still needs a documented decision about data access and the obligations in any offer. Start the review with records you can reconcile.
Separate the launch claim from the operating test
On 29 September 2026, Experian announced commercial Cashflow Attributes, describing more than 500 attributes from business bank transactions. Its preliminary analysis claimed up to a 24% lift in predictive performance when combined with traditional commercial data for thin-file businesses. This is the vendor's model-performance claim. It does not quantify an approval increase or a rate saving for your firm.
The Federal Reserve Banks' employer-firm report, published 3 March 2026 using the 2025 Small Business Credit Survey, found that 60% of online-lender borrowers reported costs above expectations. The survey used a convenience sample. Treat that historical finding as a reason to inspect written terms; it does not test Experian's product or establish a current market-wide cost measure.
The working question is narrower: can you explain the bank record, understand the requested access and forecast the actual repayment? Create a short application file with a consent record, receipts reconciliation and offer checklist.
Name the accounts and the period
Identify the legal entity applying and the accounts receiving its sales or paying its expenses. Write down the period requested by the lender. If income and costs are split across accounts, ask which accounts are needed and how the assessment handles that split.
Keep a note of seasonal trading, a new payment processor or a large one-off receipt. Attach the explanation to the period it affects. Leave the transaction record intact. A correction should explain an error with supporting evidence, rather than make a difficult trading month disappear.
Get the access questions answered
Read the connection screen and privacy information before proceeding. Name the lender and any data provider, the data categories, stated purposes, access duration and available withdrawal process. Save the dated explanation and the accounts selected. Ask a named support contact about anything left unclear.
Use the lender's verified website and current instructions. A familiar bank logo alone does not explain who receives the information. This is a US-focused operating checklist, with no promise that another jurisdiction's open-banking rules govern the connection.
Keep the permission question separate from the acceptance of finance. Confirming data access does not settle fees, guarantees or repayment dates. Those belong in the offer documents.
Build a receipts bridge
Take an invented business account with $20,000 of deposits in one month. It includes a $5,000 owner transfer and a $3,000 transfer from another company account. Removing those transfers leaves $12,000 that may represent customer receipts, before costs and refunds.
Check the remaining entries against invoices, payment-processor reports and accounting records. Label anything unresolved. The calculation reconciles your forecast; it does not claim to reproduce Experian's algorithm or reveal what a lender would approve.
Continue the bridge from customer collections to cash available. Deduct refunds, supplier payments, payroll, tax reserves and existing debt commitments. Keep dates alongside amounts. Turnover and cash ready for the next collection can diverge when customers pay late.
Run the collection date through a weak month
Obtain the proposed payment frequency and amount or formula. Put each collection into a dated forecast. Then run a second case with a delayed customer payment, lower sales or a supplier bill arriving earlier. State the assumptions and show the date of any gap.
For another invented planning example, a business has $2,500 of cash headroom on a collection date after committed costs. A $900 financing payment leaves $1,600. If a $2,000 customer receipt slips beyond that date, only $500 of headroom remains before the payment, creating a $400 gap. These figures are a stress test, with no lender threshold implied.
Record the proposed response to the gap. It could be reducing the project, staging the purchase, retaining more cash or declining the facility. An uncertain sale should stay uncertain in the forecast.
Request the complete offer
Use one comparison sheet for financing amount, cash received after fees, total repayment or pricing formula, term, collection frequency, security, personal guarantees and default provisions. Identify the finance provider behind a platform's branding. Ask how early settlement and arrears would work under this agreement.
For payments linked to receipts, obtain the collection formula and any minimum or reconciliation requirement in writing. For fixed payments, show every collection date. Avoid importing terms from another offer with a similar cash-flow label.
Compare the facility with waiting, a smaller purchase, available supplier terms or collecting outstanding invoices first. The uneven-income financing guide helps organise that timing comparison. Keep the same assumptions across options.
Set the decision and the stop condition
Retain the access record, reconciled forecast and actual terms together. List unanswered questions and who will answer them. A missing guarantee clause or collection formula is a document request to resolve before acceptance.
Finish with one recorded decision: proceed under understood terms, ask for clarification, reduce the funding need or wait. If the weak-month forecast has an unresolved cash gap, retain it in the decision file. A faster application does not remove that operating problem.
From comparison to calculation
Check the terms in the offer you actually receive.
Credit Over Debt’s Offer X-Ray compares the amount financed, fees, payment schedule and modeled cost using the figures you enter.
