A lower monthly loan payment can leave you paying for longer. Before using a personal loan to replace card debt, put the cash received, every payment and the final repayment date on the same page. Compare both commitments over the same horizon, with any unpaid balance still visible.

The Bank of England reported a 9.96% effective rate on new personal loans for August 2026, in its 29 September release. That is a dated aggregate observation, not an available loan quote or the rate a particular applicant will receive. This guide uses it as context, not as an input to your repayment forecast.

Separate the market figure from your quote

Keep three labels distinct: the measured market rate, the representative APR in an advertisement and the terms offered to you. They answer different questions. An average describes observed borrowing; the document you are considering should state your own cost and repayment obligations.

MoneyHelper explains that a representative APR must be available to at least 51% of people approved at that rate or better; it does not mean 51% of all applicants receive approval. Its continuing guidance also warns that a longer repayment term increases interest cost. Read the actual offer before using a headline rate in a comparison.

Save the quote date and whether the rate is fixed or variable. Record any conditions still outstanding. If an estimate becomes a different offer after verification, compare the new terms afresh rather than carrying the earlier monthly payment into the decision.

Compare the same usable amount

Write the amount needed to clear the existing balance beside the new money actually available. A loan advertised for £5,000 may not leave £5,000 usable if a charge is deducted. Ask whether a fee is paid separately, taken from the advance or added to the balance. Those treatments create different cash schedules.

For a consolidation decision, obtain a current settlement figure for the debt you intend to replace. A statement balance and the amount required on the repayment date can differ. Keep the quote and settlement dates together, and ask what happens if funding arrives after the figure expires.

Do not borrow an extra amount merely to reach a more attractive advertised pricing band. First compare the additional money owed with the purpose it would serve. An unused extra advance remains part of the obligation, even if the monthly payment appears manageable.

Put the payment and total side by side

The following is an invented comparison of supplied payment schedules, not a calculation of a lender's APR. Both options provide £5,000 with no separate fee in this example. Option A requires 24 payments of £230, totalling £5,520. Option B requires 36 payments of £165, totalling £5,940.

Option B reduces the monthly commitment by £65 but increases total cash repayment by £420 and extends the schedule by twelve months. The lower payment may address one budget constraint while creating another. Neither number alone decides whether replacing the existing debt is worthwhile.

Repeat that multiplication with the actual number and amount of payments in your quote. Add separately payable charges once, and check whether the stated total already includes them. If there is an irregular first or final payment, list it explicitly. Do not multiply a typical payment by the term and assume the result captures every charge.

Keep the existing repayment path visible

Build a second schedule for leaving the current debt in place. Use the balance, actual interest terms and a payment you can repeat. For a card, account for the promotional end date and whether different balances carry different rates. A fixed instalment formula should not be presented as an exact revolving-card statement calculation.

Our balance-transfer comparison tool can illustrate a simplified card path with explicit assumptions. It is not a personal-loan quote or a substitute for the provider's repayment schedule. Keep fees, residual debt and its modelling limitations in view when comparing its result with a loan document.

If the card calculation leaves money outstanding at the comparison date, show that remaining balance beside the cash already paid. Comparing only payments made would hide the debt still owed. The same rule applies to a loan with a final lump sum.

Test the weaker month before accepting

Use income you can reasonably rely on, then subtract rent or mortgage, essential bills and existing commitments. Compare the proposed collection date with the date money arrives. An apparently affordable monthly average can conceal a shortfall before payday.

If the plan depends on putting everyday spending back onto the cleared card, write that down. The new loan does not stop the old balance returning. A consolidation comparison needs a workable spending and repayment plan, rather than an assumption that replacing the debt has removed it.

Check early-settlement terms separately. Ask for a dated settlement statement when considering repayment before the end, and compare the actual amount required. Avoid assuming that every remaining scheduled payment disappears without a charge or that an advertised rate settles the question.

Leave with a written comparison

Keep one row for each option: usable funds, fees, payment dates, total cash repayment, debt remaining at the comparison date and final repayment date. Mark unresolved conditions instead of filling them with an average. These fields make a question to the provider specific enough to answer.

A smaller purchase, waiting or an affordable change to the existing repayment plan may avoid a new commitment. If essential bills or existing repayments already do not fit, seek free independent debt guidance before adding another collection. No lender has paid for a place in this comparison.

Start with the actual quote and current settlement figure. If you cannot reconcile the money received, money repaid and debt left over, pause the application and ask for the missing schedule.
