An October publication does not necessarily measure October borrowing. On the CFPB's credit-card pages retrieved on 4 November 2026, the overview and linked detail pages display different latest-month labels. Those labels should be reconciled before they support a combined account of current credit demand. [C1]

The useful decision is which comparison the evidence actually permits. Preserve the page, the observation month and the measure together. Do not solve a disagreement by selecting whichever label makes the strongest headline.

Keep four dates in the evidence record

Give a release four separate fields: publication date, observation period, revision status and retrieval date. Publication tells you when an item was made available. Observation tells you when the activity happened. Revision status tells you whether the recorded result may change. Retrieval tells you when you inspected that version.

These fields answer different questions. A page reopened today may contain old observations. An updated release can revise an earlier month without creating evidence about today's applications. A useful sentence states the measured period before interpreting the direction.

In a working note, use one row per series rather than one row per website. Add the exact page URL and the unit. That prevents a later writer from attaching a publication date to a number that came from a different chart.

Keep the conflicting labels visible

The overview labels originations March 2026, inquiries July 2026 and tightness May 2026. The retrieved origination and inquiry detail notes identify March 2026 as their most recent graph data, with October publication labels. This article withholds a joined numerical conclusion; it does not decide which page the publisher intended to control. [C2]

Write the disagreement into the record rather than silently repairing it. A suitable status is unresolved pending a consistent dated series or publisher clarification. Preserve both labels so a subsequent researcher can reproduce the issue. Do not advance a check date without reopening the page.

That approach leaves some useful findings intact. You can describe the existence of the dashboard and its definitions. You can identify what is missing for a defensible comparison. You cannot claim that every visible change describes the same current group or month.

Counts, limits and indices need different questions

The origination detail page describes new accounts and aggregate credit limits; it also distinguishes the displayed monthly and seasonally adjusted series. Those are different measures, not interchangeable labels for money actually borrowed. [C3] Record which series you selected before comparing values.

The inquiry page explains that its inquiry measures are indices because lenders do not all pull reports from all three nationwide reporting agencies. An index should not be relabelled as a complete count of applications or applicants. [C4] Matching a familiar-looking axis is not sufficient evidence that two charts share a denominator.

As an invented illustration, imagine an index moving from 100 to 110. That is a ten-point movement and a 10 percent increase relative to 100. It does not tell you that ten people applied, that 110 cards opened or that an individual has a higher approval chance. The example is arithmetic only, not a dashboard observation.

Provisional data do not become final through repetition

The origination notes say the latest six months of data are not final. [C5] Keep that caveat beside a reproduced observation rather than burying it in a general footer. If an input changes, the resulting comparison needs another check.

For a recurring report, retain the earlier snapshot with its retrieval date and distinguish a revision from a new month. Otherwise a revised historical value can appear to be a recent market event. This is an evidence-management task, not a prediction about the size or direction of a future revision.

When a downloaded series is needed to settle a consequential claim, retrieve and inspect it before using the claim. This explainer has not reconciled the dashboard's raw series. It therefore publishes no repaired values, current demand estimate or original market dataset.

Save a reproducible exception record

For this check, retain three separate rows: the overview inquiry label, the inquiry-detail note and the origination-detail note. Each row needs its URL, the label exactly as displayed and the 4 November retrieval date. Keep the October publication label in a different column. The disagreement remains visible without requiring a colleague to reconstruct an undocumented browsing session.

Give the record a next evidence request: inspect a dated downloadable series or obtain publisher clarification before combining months. Record whether that step was completed, rather than treating a link to a download as proof that its contents were checked. This article has re-opened the pages; it has not audited the underlying CSV series or established which label is authoritative.

Apply a comparison gate before writing the headline

Use five checks: same product definition, observation period, unit, adjustment basis and revision status. If any field is unknown, narrow the sentence or hold the comparison. A description of what one dated series measures may still be useful without a market-wide conclusion.

For a consumer deciding whether to apply, the dashboard also remains separate from the actual quote, credit record and repayment budget. Aggregate activity cannot settle lender acceptance or individual affordability. A historical movement is not a reason to submit another application without checking the personal decision.

Keep the unresolved month labels and the dated primary pages in one note. The next meaningful update is a reconciled series or clear publisher explanation. Until then, name the uncertainty precisely and withhold the combined conclusion.
